pingudroid rated Odd Realm

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

I really enjoy God games and building simulators and I also love pixel-art, so I was predisposed to like this game from the start. I must say, it has been enjoyable in some ways and I don't regret trying it out. However, there is one huge obstacle that gets on the way and has made me stop playing entirely after just a few hours: the layer system.

To be blunt, the system is inconvenient, annoying, hard to navigate and simply not nice to look at. It makes the graphics (which are otherwise pretty standard for an indie title) feel way uglier than they actually are, simply because half of the map permanently looks like it has random black holes all over it. In particular, I don't understand why there are dark spots where the trees are supposed to be. It makes no sense, doesn't add anything gameplay-wise and it just looks bad.

After playing around for a few hours on my first map, I spent half an hour trying to generate a new map that was as flat as possible precisely for this reason. After trying and failing half a dozen times (each new map just seemed to have MORE mountains on it), I just gave up.

I find the game to be almost unplayable right now, simply because of the layer system. Perhaps having 2-3 set layers for all maps (at most!) might be acceptable, if the layer system were relevant to gameplay, which it isn't at the moment. But, imho, you could just get rid of the layer system entirely, make the entire map visible and accessible at all times, and that wouldn't change a thing about the game itself, while making it much more enjoyable to players.

Idk, I understand that this game is currently in development, so I don't want to be unnecessarily harsh. That's why I'm giving you 4 stars. The game mostly seems fine to me, I didn't find any bugs, it runs smoothly and it's actually fun (if a bit slow/uneventful at times), but the layers are just a terrible design decision. Get rid of them as soon as you can, or reduce them to a bare minimum, and your game will be a lot better for it. Don't keep building on top of something that is broken from the start.

I'll keep an eye on this project. My best wishes!
