bison64 rated Clam Man 2: Open Mic

bison64 rated a game 4 years ago
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

This is one of those rare games that makes me giddy over how fun the premise is, and how well it's executed. The gameplay consists of a stat-based dialogue system, and some quests to complete by clicking around and talking to people. Where it really shines though is how surprisingly well it works with the premise. It's a comedy game where you play as an office worker-turned-comedian, and your main motivation is finding jokes by walking around and talking to people. Oh, and you also happen to be a clam. A comedy game about being a comedian seems like it would be destined to fail; there are way too many ways it could succumb to bad writing. Yet, the writing in this game is superb. The game is bursting with charm, and I can't name another game that's made me laugh out loud this much. The jokes don't feel forced, and the comedic conversations are fun to read through. Part of the reason for this is how endearing the characters can be. It feels like the characters have personality way beyond being fodder for jokes, and I found myself really liking a lot of the characters and wanting to hear more from them. The partial voice acting and fun character designs also help with this. Another part of the reason for this is how the gameplay affects the conversations. The stat-based dialogue leads to some really funny responses that feel unique to your character. It also feels like you're encouraged to be funny - the main mechanic is finding jokes to perform by taking on certain quests and making certain choices. It also feels like it pays off - taking the funniest route in an optional quest and getting to end my set with that as my joke felt really rewarding.

Overall, this is an amazing prologue, and I'm really excited for the full game. I'm buying this asap when it comes out. I could say way more about why I love this game so much, but I need to stop writing so I can go recommend this to all my friends.
