MothTheDeadMan rated The New Flesh

A downloadable game.

I guess I can start off by saying, I have already recommended this to a few friends, just for the art, and the interesting first half alone. I would like to say again, the art of this game is fantastic, and I enjoy the themes quite a bit, the writing at the start is interesting, the avoidable, but deadly monsters are interesting, and you can start gathering clues, and piecing together a story, the frantic pace, and using death to not only show off solid death animations, but as a way to impede progress, it creates a relationship with the player I enjoy.

With the good out of the way, I have to point out the bad, and I'd say the bad had me quit after 2/4 endings, and the primary point is the combat. Where the start is slow, interesting, and lets you take your time to absorb whats going on, the later half of the game forces you into combat constantly. This is obviously the weakest point of the game. After dying to swinging at the wrong thing, that feels randomly, or getting stun locked, and having to go through the same parts again, and again, it just left me frustrated, and killed my momentum to play, until I just didn't really care about the remaining endings and secrets.

I still have to give a soft recommendation, but point out that horror games excel when players are given choices, against their dwindling resources, they can run, hide, or when needed fight as a last resort. This game gave no real choice, and suffered greatly for it. I am excited to see the next game made by this dev, much love.
