The Elder is a playbook that nails the tone and feel of Galactic 2e. Like the playbooks in the core game, the Elder is not a character class like would be expected from a game like Force and Destiny (or Knights of the Old Republic) but instead a narrative archetype, a chance to take the narrative reins of an exiled master in a forested world and chart a better course, adding to the time-honored tradition of writing better Star Wars stories than George Lucas.
But an the Elder playbook understands something else about Star Wars as well—that it’s a pastiche, one that shifts based on who’s writing it. In the case of this playbook, it’s a reference to Peter B. Parker of Into the Spiderverse, a pull from the author’s experience in much the same way the Original Trilogy pulls from Westerns and World War Two footage, in much the same way Star Wars Dark Forces pulled from DOOM clones, in much the same way Light of the Jedi pulled from...well, it pulled from the superhero stories, too.
This playbook understands that just because Star Wars is famous for mentor characters, that doesn’t mean those mentor characters have to be like Obi-Wan or Kanan. They can be something new, a new patch for the quiltwork that is Star Wars.
