I was unsure how well tic-tac-toe would work as a mechanic, but it's brilliant. The premise is simple, and so are the prompts, but they really really work to build the rivalry between two characters. Framing this battle with flashbacks, both short and long-term, building the history of this rivalry and seeing the way it plays out in the battle is extremely satisfying. Xs and Os often leads to ties, but I find you can often get to the make-or-break moment in this game knowing exactly who you think should win or lose this match and throw the game to get the narrative conclusion you want. I played this game with someone really unfamiliar with narrative and prompt-focused RPGs and they had an absolute blast. Simply one of the best 2-players RPGs I've played to date.
