Stephan Sokolow rated You Have to Win the Game

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Like Super Win The Game, this does a beautiful job of presenting a distinctive type of game in the best possible light, but it also has shortcomings. I suppose that means that this perfected the formula and Super Win The Game was able to reuse the lessons learned.

As someone who was playing Commander Keen and the like on VGA fairly early on, I never really had any nostalgia for CGA's graphical limitations, but I leave EGA mode off in this because it just feels right for this to be played that way.

That said, a star gets knocked off for the same two complaints as with Super Win The Game:

  1. I'm currently stuck in what the AVGN calls a "where the f*** do I go" state (and, until I give up and try a walkthrough, wandering back and forth through the same tricky platforming puzzles trying to find what I missed is getting very old).
  2. I don't like how it looks with the CRT simulation off but I really wish I could turn off tube distortion... or at least turn it down. Most of my PC nostalgia is for the LCDs on my father's work laptops and, when I wasn't using those, I was using a 15" CRT with more gradual curvature than the simulated one.
