lilithkismet rated Spectres of the Cold

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

A 3D stealth game with some horror elements. A child decides to visit a ruined temple in the hopes of contacting the spirits of their dead parents, and needs to sneak past the monsters along the way or get killed. There's not much to the story, but it takes only 20 minutes to play. The art is low-poly, simple but serviceable. I liked the cute deer-horned main character and the attention that went into choosing a range of background effects as ambiance - rain or wind on some levels, mysterious tones for the temple - rather than just sticking with one thing throughout. Although death restarts your current level, it isn't that painful because the levels are quite short. I personally wish that mouse rather than keyboard Q/E could be used to rotate the camera, especially give that only WASD worked for movement - or if not mouse, then at least the ability to remap the controls so I could choose keys that felt less awkward for me. Generally I'd give a game like this an "average" rating, but I ran into a repetitive bug that tanked my enjoyment of the game. Sometimes when I was killed, the game would just completely freeze. Given that it's a short game, there's no save system, so I had to close and restart from the beginning multiple times until I finally managed to make it through without dying/freezing. If the game interests you go ahead and give it a try, the game itself isn't bad at all. I just had too much trouble with it to give it a higher rating.
