bix1521 rated Depth of Extinction

bix1521 rated a game 5 years ago
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

I am close to finishing my first playthrough and I am having great fun with it.

Classes:

  • Assault: Was my first max level and was extremely fun getting there, rushing in and unloading all those shells. I felt this class was made well and is extremely fun to  burst down enemies with.
  • Warden: At first I thought it was just a beefed up rookie; but towards the end game, their draw fire skill was good for strategizing. I feel it lets me get away with more reckless plays which i can see be bad gameplay wise because I can leave my units standing out with this skill active, which can be bad game design. I enjoyed using this class overall though.
  • Solder: Is bad in my opinion, the only class i did not reach to max level. I think it boiled down to their first skill being one of the worst for all classes; using two items. I never needed two of an item and when I did; i can bring it on two different characters
  • Sniper: A good class that does its job, work well and is simple.
  • Saboteur: The sneak damage mechanic isn't that good, Visual Range is a positive. I never benefit from their skills because their always so far back (though that might be me only using sniper weapons on them). I don't think sneak mechanics are strong in this game to have a class based around it.
  • Wreaker: Total Mayhem is overpowered and fun; I understand how the world ended in the way it did because shooting an endless amount of lasers is great.
  • Wildcat: One of the best class due to the massive amount of bullets that can be outputted. Tied with the Wreaker as the top class in the game.
  • Sailor: Its a good class; gives a super strong buff to the team and has some good damage output. Its a good support class.
  • Butcher: At first I thought they were terrible at first but at the max level, one of my top 3 classes.  Sorta plain and weak at early levels but after taking damage and such, can perform a lot of damage.

Class Fav: 1: Wreaker / Wildcat; 2: Assault; 3: Butcher

I had the problem of getting 4-5 recruits after a full map exploration and I was just drowning in recruits. Also when selecting units before embarking on a quest, there is no hud info for their skill points which made it harder to choose and differentiate from units.

Weapons:

Most of the weapons I have used stopped at tier 5, with only having a single tier 6 rifle.

  • Shotguns: Strong and fun; I like the +2 damage to enemies within range, as it incentivizes an aggressive play style. The only two weapons that really change up play style is Snipers for getting good long range surprise damage or the Heavy weapons great destruction capacity.
  • SMG; A good weapon that does a good amount of damage. This is the only weapon I used on a class not specialized in it. One of my favs.
  • Rifles: A standard weapon for any game, not much to say other than does its job well. Good for over watching.
  • Harpoons: One (or two) powerful shot that pierces cover. I dont know if it actually does so but sure feels like it. I like this weapons  powerful shot with good length.
  • Snipers: Good, does what it says. I felt they were not as powerful as rifles of the same tier but had greater range.
  • Heavy: The catastrophe cannon can be obtained real early and in a large amount which can break balance. I liked that i got it midgame still because it wasn't really overpowered till end game.
  • Grenade Launcher: Early difficulties; its a handy weapon but drops off later on. The stun grenade launcher is bad and you cannot change my mind on it.

Items:

You got your healing items, your grenades, revive, and buffs. All are good, I always aimed to use the highest Tier of items because power creep. I neve used the buff item adenine due to needing to always move first before firing.

 Accessories:

Standard improve stats were good, sometimes I would go down a tier from +10 aim +15 crit  to +10 aim +1 range because i felt it made a difference. I liked the early game items gave some special effects and waas good overall. I never used the HP boosting items as I never felt a use for them; though i often got to low health for some missions. I believe its called the overloading core or what to allow all energy shots be fired at once. It was very broken but my favorite with a wreaker's catastrophe cannon; I got it late game where it clearly belongs.

Missions:

I liked the missions though they can get repetitive. Stronghold takeovers were my favorite as there's tons of enemies to mow through.  Planting the bomb was my least favorite because interacting with the items are slow, also Item collection was not fun as it was very slow. I tried to play more recklessly and pick up items during combat which was kind of fun but  it is way easier just to finish the combat and auto move to the loot, love the auto move though, made things go way fast.

I like the high and low alert system currently implemented. Made things go way faster as I am not forced to slowly crawl to find the next pile of enemies else be caught off guard. Made missions fast paced and such; and there is still a level of caution to be taken else you may accidently activate enemies.

Enemy AI was simple but did its job well; I cant think of other methods of AI other than adding more skills and such. The difficulty spike was done well. Whenever the game starting to feel too easy, the jump in enemy difficulty felt refreshing.

Overall:

Its a good game; I don't know why I spend as much time as i did reviewing it.

For the future: I was browsing your discord and looks like your in a good amount of development already. I dont know if you would enjoy even more opinions on  of what direction to take your game but I really want to get mine out there.

You know how the Wrecker's skill "Total Mayham", instead of nerfing it like a reasonable developer who is sane; It would be very interesting if everything was buffed, from enemies to allies. Like some classes are already near that level like the wildcat's multi target attack and the assults 3 shotgun shot unload. But like im imagining these survivors are out here being the best of the best and doing impossible things and that entails like wicked matrix levels of cool. I realize im thinking of a games like Gears of War Tactics or Xcom Chimera Squad.
