Still kinda mad after all these years; it's got max style points, is a huge love letter to all forms of metal, has a great style, has great actors, the combat's great, the world's great, the music's great (duh), the characters are interesting and so on and the game makes you think it's gonna be some great God of War clone, but...
...then pretty quick the plot's like "oh yeah we're screwed, let's build an army" and suddenly it hard-pivots and becomes an RTS. One of the bigger fumbles of all time, drove a lot of people mad back in the day.
It's just weird, you get all these combos and powers, and you do the first chapter or two like it's a fully-featured metal-themed GoW clone, and then you get an army and it becomes some C-tier RTS, all because Double Fine wanted to mix things up in a game that didn't need it. Now you're spamming your samey army of recycled mobs against the opponent's samey army of recycled mobs in every level (they're a different color).
Not surprising at all that everyone had the same response to the "twist" that it was actually an RTS, that same "Wait, what? What is this?" response, and not in a good way.
What a silly game.
