Tbh I don't really think that I fully understand the game but I still think it's amazing anyway so heres some of my thoughts on it!
I REALLY like the concept of how in most of the routes, the party is unable to see the door because of how it only answers to the "hero," and since they change their idenity it no longer answers to them.
Speaking of the "hero" its really interesting just how insecure they are. In the first place they only became one by stealing someone else's idenity so it makes sense that they act like that. They want to be SOMEONE so they try to fill to fill the role of something that they might not actually be fit for, which is why they are easily able to assume the identity of someone else.
For the other 3(?) members, the mage is my favorite and I really felt for them when they felt like no one really cared about how much effort they put in to keep everyone alive, and also how ironically in the end it lead to the party's demise, showing just how needed they actually are.
Because of that the jester is also by FAR my least favorite. The way they act in mages route made me really dislike them, and while I still dislike them after going through their route, I can now see that their ill-timed humor and jokes are a deliberate act in order to hide the ore vulnerable parts of themselves, and also how they personally believe that without it, they really have nothing to provide for the party. It especially resonated with me how at the end they essentially just left, saying something along the lines of "I just want to go home." Its kinda selfish after everything they just saw, but at the same time it shows how they never really cared for this kind of adventure in the first place, and what they really wanted was to garner the same love that the hero automatically gets just by existing.
I don't actually have that many thoughts on the warrior but I still love them. The way they go on attacking everything in their path in order to protect a world that ultimately doesn't care for them is very sad... Also they're very silly.
Now for the princess/rogue(?). Tbh I still don't know what their whole deal is but I'll start off by saying that there's definitely something in how everyone else uses they them while the princess is the only one with "gendered" prounouns. I also think there's something to how the princess can do nothing but wait for the hero to save her, and that even if they save her she can never truly escape from the tower unless she assumes their role as a hero.
Now this is where it gets a bit confusing to me but also really interesting. By what's shown in the princess ending I can assume that princesses are actually heros that exchanged their identity in order to let their own princess go free. Because of that, the rogue, which is connected to the princess somehow, may actually a version of the princess whos main purpose is to kill the hero and stop the cycle from continuing. That is also why the rogue holds some resentment for the hero, because no matter what the door will never open for them nore accept them, while the hero can just waltz in even if they're Some Guy.
In the myself ending, I essentially think that princess id trying to forgive the hero for still pursuing this path even though it does nothing but cause an endless cycle of misery, and in turn the hero wants the princess to forgive the world for being so cruel that they only accept the hero.
I most definitely got some things wrong in my interpertation of this but this genuinely such an amazing game that resonated with me alot. In the end it really is better if we just accepted who we are...
