Apis4 rated New Horizon

Apis4 rated a Visual Novel 6 days ago
A downloadable Visual Novel.

Solid start.

This game will be amazing when fully finished. Nothing else to add.. Checks all the boxes for top tier AVN, and checks them with aplomb.

Watch this space. Cannot wait for more. Definitely worth a try.

That is what I PREVIOUSLY said of this game, and gave it 5 Stars..... BUT, however, since I played through the last couple of updates, I discovered something unforgivable.

At one point, one of the main LI's, in fact, possibly the MOST CENTRAL Love Interest to the story, should have become available to romance/conquer, but this option was always greyed out.

Turns out, there are two triggers VERY early in the game.... and if you handle them wrong you are locked out. You have to handle them RIGHT in fact, to NOT lock out that route. There is no warning, nor is there any suggestion, or foreshadowing leading up to either moment. You just have to do/say this thing at this point, and not anything else, and then the same again at another key point.... and once you are past them, that is it.

THIS is UNFORGIVABLE in an AVN. In a good AVN AT NO POINT should ANY path be locked out, or you be locked in to dead end gameplay which is not locked.. but will NOT lead to anything... because of blind choices you had NO opportunity to handle better, because you were not informed, and there was NO OFF RAMPS.  It is fine to have consequences, and to lock out certain routes, and have dead end gameplay.

But if you want consequences, make the choices OBVIOUSLY consequential, at least to be fair. If you want lockouts, at least give some context to understand that might happen, if you do not make it a series of choices which are obvious rejections of a path or girl... make it so that girls nature is clear, and with clear biases towards certain ideals... so when the choice which may lock out the path comes along, you have that to inform your choices. If you want something to dead end because of a missed choice... or the wrong one.... and DO NOT wish to make it SO obvious, want to be veiled, then you MUST include the opportunity of an off ramp, to redo or undo that later, at least that is the ONLY fair way to handle it.

No element of gameplay should EVER be a gamble, or even counter intuitive. If a girl has been playing hard to get, and is very prim and proper, and gets upset being an object of sexual desire for the MC...  then unlocking her as a love interest should rely on winning her over with something gentlemanly. If it actually relies on you groping her when she is emotionally vulnerable and seeking warmth and human affection with the MC in a moment of weakness, that is NOT a fair mechanic. If normally she loses it when you perv on her, or mention her tight ass, or hit on her suggestively, anything akin to that SHOULD NEVER be something that suddenly works... because the game spent ages telling you it is DOES NOT.

This game is great, it has neat hook, sweet aesthetic, hot girls, and is visually lush overall.. and the Adult content is of high calibre and pretty damn hot, among the hottest in the genre for mine, if not as frequent as in some AVNs......

......but forcing me to replay the game, from the start, all over again, relatively deep in to the current content, because it turns out I made a couple of errors early on with no warning, and no off ramps, and evident obvious opportunities forthcoming to UNDO this?

THAT makes any game, but especially an AVN... UTTER TRASH.

One star, and 0.5 out of 10, for everything else the game is, which is amazing, but that ONE FLAW is TERMINAL, CRITICAL, and UNFORGIVABLE and instantly makes the game a gross failure.
