Whew... Where do I begin?
Deepest Desires is a blueberry focused game, and it's prominent because as soon you get "Perma'd" with air, it still refers to as blueberries instead.
It's obviously inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, even some part of the scenes (during the overgrowth) further emphasis on that claim.
It's rare to see a blueberry themed game in any of the expansion kinks. It's funny how there's a lot of blueberry themed artworks, and yet, none of those games aren't just Visual novels or RPG maker games (no offense).
But execution wise for Deepest Desires?
- Oops, all Game Overs!: Usually, I don't mind game overs, as long if it's telegraphed that it would lead up to a game over (Ex: Like the options in Tour Mode, because I got a game over on my first playthrough early on). But to literally kicked me out of the menu every time I get one instead of a simple button to restart?
- Holy bugs!: There are a couple of bugs and issues that annoys me deserve a section on itself.
- The saves to resume tour mode barely worked. Sure, getting a game over and then forced to go back to main menu is fine, but I realize later on that it'll erase your previous progress as soon as you resume, resulting in a very rare (but impossible in one sitting) skinny rank if you resume at the last level (Level 18).
- Speaking of that, Level 18 is bugged too. If you enter the door, it only plays a sound and nothing happened. But if you go back to menu, and attempt to resume Level "19", then the game won't let you. That's why you have to enter the door twice to finish Tour Mode.
- While not a bug, there's no confirmation button for those menus, even I accidentally clicked the "Quit Game" button and lost my progress.
- There's this one bug that I'll explain in another section.
- Let's Go Gambling!: Alright, it's time for the biggest elephant in the room: The random chances to escape and deflate are atrocious! At high Arousal, there's like an average of 30% - 40% chance to escape, and every time feels like either the game blesses me with good RNG that'll let me escape easily, or the RNG is sick at me and decided to end my run over a simple vine that I got grabbed. Why there are two individual buttons to escape and deflate is beyond me, as it should've been one button anyways (Ex: You can't deflate if you're grabbed).
- Even the default 15 Juicings isn't enough, it'll go all the way down to around 3 - 5 juicings for that one interaction if you're unlucky enough to get grappled, escaped, then immediately grappled (+ no invincibility frames after escaping), escaped, attempted to deflate because you're immobile, and so on so on. THIS is with the fact that it's easy to get really high arousal which also makes escaping harder and harder.
- Everything is just unfair: Aside from the brutal RNG + no invincibility frames, it doesn't stop there. The player's (and the enemy's as well) hitbox is tall like a rectangle instead of a square, making it look like a fusion between a platformer and a top-down movement. I say this because you can also get grabbed if you're under or above, making it look like the enemies or hazards just leap over and hit you from afar. It's near impossible to dodge the enemy if they're approaching at you horizontally.
- There's this one bug that pisses me off, is that if you got fully perma'd and then go back into any of the modes (Yes, including Tour Mode to continue where you left off), then you'll still stay as 199 Fill Level, Level 5 Ripeness, 100 Arousal, and with 100% Perma-Berry Progress. Resuming back to The Greenhouse is a guaranteed game over, and resuming back to The Pneumatics gives you a chance, but the looming threat of RNG can end your run that forces you to restart over and over again until you get lucky.
- And yes, I'm aware that the bug is already acknowledged, but it shouldn't be that hard to fix, right?
- The Pneumatics are my worst nightmare: Has to be the most FRUSTRATING level I've ever seen. Layered with really evil enemy placement (w/ tall hitbox along with the player) that boxes you out or had to tank a hit to progress throughout the level and keys that rest between 3 - 4 air tanks, but even that's not enough. But the pumps? In some of the varying maps (Especially the ones where there's a large row of pumps or just 3 - 4 pumps bundled together), it's impossible to get by them without taking a hit or get you stuck in a loop of trying to deflate you back to normal after getting instant-immobile. This burns out a lot of limited Juicings, and that seals the deal of setting it to infinite juicings on all of my playthrough.
- And remember, the player has a huge hitbox and there's no way to get by them if they're lined up in a tall vertical row.
- Oh yeah, that plant girl on the Greenhouse level? If you get unlucky once, you'll get stuck in a loop trying to escape, then she just converted you into a blueberry, making you immobile (at least in one of the toggles that allows it), and trapping you into a loop of trying to escape and deflate back to normal. Because it only raises arousal before turning you into an immobile berry has got to be almost as frustrating as THOSE DAMN AIR TANKS... But at least The Greenhouse is tolerable than The Pneumatics (I got up to Level 103 on endless).
Don't get me wrong, I really want to enjoy the game. It's just that I tend to get really finnicky when it comes to RNG that doesn't rely on skill but relies strongly on luck and gambling. Hell, placing the grass tiles that has a chance to grapple you + with the berries that the player eats is also not a good look unless if you're like really skinny and it's very easy to keep both of your Fill Level and Arousal at 0. Because at high arousal, you're basically have that same 30% - 40% chance to get out of that situation.
But I really do love the writing, the story behind it, the characters (Even if it's just a few notable ones), and I assume it's just a game where it'll be fun to play to dodge and weave enemies and obstacles, and if you messed up by player error, you'll get the berry treatment and it's only your fault (unless if you did it yourself lmao)... I didn't realize how bad it is when the game relies so much on RNG.
If the issues are cleared up, I'll change my ratings, but I'll have to be honest about my review. Sorry about the long list of bad things, and I hope it's not too discouraging about my review. <3
