Dominion of Darkness is an impressively ambitious text-based strategy game. What starts as a simple "play the Dark Lord" premise quickly develops into a surprisingly deep mix of kingdom management, espionage, diplomacy, military campaigns, character relationships, and long-term planning.
The game's greatest strength is player agency. Rarely did I feel like I was being pushed down a single path. Instead, each decision felt meaningful, and different playthroughs encouraged me to experiment with new strategies, allies, and objectives.
I also appreciated how the game embraces its villain-protagonist perspective without reducing everything to mindless destruction. Building networks, corrupting institutions, recruiting followers, and gradually expanding influence often felt more rewarding than direct conquest.
Despite being text-based, the world feels expansive, and the large number of events, characters, and branching outcomes give the game excellent replay value.
If you enjoy interactive fiction, grand strategy, dark fantasy, or games that reward planning and experimentation, Dominion of Darkness is easy to recommend.
