The description seems weirdly inaccurate. It mentions side-scrolling, "recruiting allies", and deck building, and I feel like these words are vaguely related to what's going on in the game, but pretty misleading.
This is a demo and a sales funnel for steam, which I understand, but it all feels very heavy-handed. The totally mandatory click out to steam after finishing a game felt a bit disrespectful to the community of folks using itch as a gaming platform.
As for actual gameplay, this borrows an addictive formula from other successful games, but I found a few things in particular unsatisfying.
- The amount of random skills you can collect is seemingly unlimited. You eventually have tons of skills and it becomes quite hard to get "a build" going, as it becomes harder and harder to level up a particular skill. Some sort of unlock for additional refreshes might help, but I think you should consider limiting the total number of skills that can be acquired.
- On a similar note, for similar reasons, the other unlockable characters feel extremely "samey". I think you should consider making some skills exclusive to particular characters.
- The unlock "skill tree" feels a bit unorganized and unbalanced, with progression and choices feeling sort of random and not really following any logic I can see. You earn two currencies by doing the same exact thing, and then spend both of those currencies on things... and if you unlock everything, you end up with a ton of extra of one of the currencies. Why even have two currencies?
Anyhow, thanks for the entertainment, I hope the feedback is useful.
