Beam Saber is a masterclass in understanding interlocking FitD mechanics, and The Giantkiller is a textbook case study in breaking those mechanics from the inside out. In a game that is all about mechs, removing the vehicle as a tool completely reframes how you view the economy of stress, harm, and desperate actions.
Alongside its masterful handling of FitD systems, though, this playbook also showcases a strikingly cohesive ideological stance. Ben’s additional writing on ethics, player principles, and GM tips take an already strong set of moves and mechanics and make them sing. Every component of this playbook reinforces and builds upon its core conceit. This is a playbook that demands immediate, visceral embodiment.
If you like The Giantkiller, I highly recommend pairing it with Behemoth and Killer, another one of Ben’s games.
