ForbiddenCloud9 rated Magic Academy

A browser game made in HTML5.

Magic Academy is a great game, but not an exceptional one.

The gameplay is mediocre. It boils down to sudden minigames that would surprise anyone during the first play through, grind through puzzle games to get materials for quest, and have a hit-or-miss experience with the surprise appearance of a card-building roguelike that I never saw in the previews.  You got to have to find the fun in those activities to even enjoy the gameplay of Magic Academy.

The story is interesting, ignoring some flaws. Assuming I comprehended the narrative right, I think Magic Academy has a good story to follow as you watch the hero build a magic academy from the ground up. However, the world-building could use some refining: the sudden appearance of a magic dust economy was not welcome, and the vampire character's storyline almost seems redundant given the (6.1.1) patch [If I remember correctly and Spoiler Alert, the head nun was killed and cult dealt with, so what's the point in the vampire characters rescue mission?]. I was legitimately invested in the story until these flaws and inconsistencies started popping up, so you might have to ignore these blemishes to enjoy them.

The characters are this game's greatest strength. The characters are fun and easy to connect with, bringing life to the backwater town that the hero found himself in. The inner conflict and romantic side quests make their characterization so much easier to get along with.  Although those two quests are a bit in a weird spot as they feel like filler given how inconsequential they are to their character, ignoring the point added to their character development spectrum. I think the characters heavily carry the quality of this game and making a highly beloved one in my opinion, which it needs to be considering most of the content comes from these characters.

Finally, the art style and animations are quite phenomenal. Not a fan of "realism" nor 3d realistic games, so this type of art style fits my style quite well. The only gripe that I have is the unfortunate resemblance to AI art, which some of the monster girls unfortunately have some unsettling resemblance towards. Whether or not if generative AI is involved in this game, I just find it unfortunate that the art style has some similarities to the polarizing technology.

Overall, I think this game rates highly in my opinion. The characters and art style are great and sell this game quite well. The story is quite interesting and makes enjoying the content outside of h-scenes enjoyable. Though the gameplay could use so fleshing out or some foreshadowing in the narrative or promotions. So, I think this game earns its 4 stars, it just does not have enough peaks to earn its last mark.

As a suggestion, perhaps have some sprites for the other villagers in the town. Having to only see the same 6 characters all over again really damages the setting for the game. Perhaps include 2 or 5 sprites of ambiguous characters to give the town some more "residences" outside of the core cast.
