Beany's work is always very cynical, but this story is so cynical and grim that it just feels insulting and pointless.  It's also not help by a very loose structure, which involves far too many footnotes and spending pages introducing characters that scarcely come up again.  Still it's certainly an interesting story, and is worth a read if you're intrigued
