Pink Narcissus rated Tales From the Underworld: Promise to Water the Flowers in my Apartment

A downloadable game.

(Review based on version 1.0. The game is fully released.)

Tales From the Underworld: Promise to Water the Flowers in my Apartment (perhaps the longest title of a FVN I've seen) popped up for me out nowhere. And 'don't judge a book by the cover' holds no meaning to me when the cover is of a sad and... hold on, I'm deleting words too risqué for a review... Okay: when the cover is of a sad and euhm very cute goat created in a lab for me! I immediately hit the download button so hard my finger broke, much like what I want him to do to my spin--

Anyway, Promise to Water the Flowers in my Apartment is a story of a man who recedes from the world around him - holed up in an apartment, too numb to make new connections, new memories, new firsts. So, he summons a demon to go out with a bang. Literally, as this is also the story of a Lust demon.

I won't go much further than the premise, as this is only the length of a novella, which I HIGHLY recommend you play. But know that I came out of it in tears. And more importantly: seeing the beauty in the small things of the world and connections we make, however brief those connections might be, which shine so much brighter in the small warm glow when they all go out.

Of course, I WILL talk about the art because it's so damn good. The moody backgrounds are a stark contrast against the flamboyant and colourful characters - the main one has so many poses it's a bit insane the game was made in a month considering there's a lot of other art too. Like CGs! I'm personally maybe a tiny bit disappointed there weren't any NSFW ones, especially of Gavino for reasons (😇), but I absolutely salute and am staring at the way his chest was drawn like that despite the very tense vibe of the scene.

The music was implemented well too, and appreciate that it used both silences and transitions very effectively to support the storytelling.

So, a really well made visual novel that surprised me by how touching and comforting it is, not despite but because of the subject matter. It also sets up to tell more stories in this world, which I very much wish to see!
