Wolf's Retreat rated Shiver

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

While I had a lot of fun playing Cozy, I honestly have to say that this game felt like a step up from that. 'Spiritual successor' feels like a very appropriate title for something like this.

Both games may start very similarly (I noticed that both cars we start in have the same air freshener hanging from their back mirrors), but they go off on very different paths. I love how this also followed the point-and-click style of gameplay. Furthermore, the art style of the environments reminded me of the hidden-object adventure games I adore. There were a couple of puzzles throughout that weren't too tricky to figure out, which is nice. In addition to all this, the sound design was excellent. It truly added to the experience and atmosphere, especially when the scenario shifted to something more tense and scary.

Speaking of tense and scary, as I played, I found myself becoming uncomfortable, but in a 'I'm enjoying this horror experience" kind of way. The parts that especially got me this way were the caves/mines and even the abandoned visitor center you visit. Overall, there was just a lot of creepiness surrounding the environments. A bit of spoilers, but what even added to the unsettlingness of everything was the fact that there is a creature that you don't see too much. Never knowing where it is or what it could be, that was really scary. The fear of the unknown, something this game plays with pretty effectively. When you do see it, though, it's freaky and worth the wait.

Overall, this was such a fun, spooky game, perfect for the wintertime, too. Honestly, I have nothing but praise to give. Awesome job to the developers, and absolutely recommend!
