CypherParadigm rated Third Crisis

A downloadable game for Windows and Android.

I really hate to give this game 3 stars. It seems like a lot of work went into it. And it has a really good story. Mind you, I only played the free version, and there was still tons of content.

The gripes I have about this game contain spoilers. So read at your own peril. I will try not to spoil much, but some of my issues are lore related. I don't know if they were fixed in the paid version, and if they were, then cool I'll change my rating if the dev or a fellow player responds to this.

1. The 5 dances. Every other NPC that is time related has a skip function to the time of day for the next event. However Jewel does not allow you to skip to the next dance, and worse, it ends after curfew. So you have to "dodge the guards" which is an easy route to memorize to avoid all guards without stopping by heading to the abandoned building first and then going up. However it's annoying especially when you have to reload a save.

2. Some choices you make do not allow you to rollback, making you have to load an autosave. And the autosaves intentionally try to lock you out of choices sometimes, and other times is way further back than you anticipated. For example if you mess up a dance, the last autosave takes you back to right after you messed up the dance, and the one before it takes you back to the end of the previous dance from the day before. Instead of autosaving when you enter the bar or sleep.

3. Super spoiler warning: When Jenna gets rejected, it would be so easy to take away the sprint ability. I intentionally didn't sprint the entire way back to the motel (after curfew) and didn't have to actively avoid any guards. The MC is focused on "blinking" or speed. So it makes sense when she gets sad like that to not be able to sprint until the breakout scene. And then the MC has some enthusiasm if you choose correctly at the bar with Jewel and Throb. You could easily half speed the sprint showing the MC is half enthused about this idea. I didn't try the other option of dialogue and don't know how that progresses. However I assume it's the same end result. It's not necessarily a game breaker, but it would have been nice to have in the game.

4. The game is a buggy mess as the dev is aware, which is why the console feature was added. But I was locked into fights with no enemies and tried skipping turns to see if it would auto end. Then I was trying to run the command to win the fight and the only command I could run was forcequit which causes a loss even with no enemies on the field. It would have been nice if the console told you the parameters you need for the code. Inevitably it lead to reloading an autosave. (see point 2.)

5. One scene in the underground tunnel requires you to be "pure" I was unable to figure out how to get in the jail to plant the bug, to get the explosives without getting arrested and offering "services". No guides online that I could find explained it. And I still don't know how to do it. I had to console command the perversion down in order to see the scene. Even when I was trying to go for a "virgin run" because I console commanded the gallery.

6. Late game the game becomes a walking sim. You leave the tunnel to go to the motel to go back to the tunnel to go back to the bar to go back to the tunnel. A teleport function makes sense for a character that can "blink" and time travel. Why there is no late game TP function is beyond me. I get early game no TP. Don't want the player to TP to the motel after slaying bandits for cash, or leaving a late bar shift. But late game you have what you need. By the time you hit the tunnels you are well progressed in all aspects of the game (or abducted by GAG if you chose that route).

7. The owning of the guard uniform. Why is it locked in your room. You get arrested with explosives in your inventory the night you get them, no feasible way to hide it. No problem! Spend a night in jail suck a D and your a free man. You have a guard suit, must hide.... or else. It makes no sense. Also..... The guard suit. Why are you invisible when you are in the guard suit when you exit the motel. You go invisible so you aren't instantly in danger of being discovered, not that any of the guards are directly looking at any of the doors instantly anyways. I never have to stop moving during the night because of how dumb and predictable the guards pathing is. But in the guard suit no one is looking for you. So why go invisible and have to close out the text and then start moving? I can only assume its because the AI takes up a lot of data and you are trying to slow the player down a tick. But it's still super annoying.

7.5. Super Spoiler warning: You are wearing the guard suit when you chase down Wildfire. When you get to the hub.... nope don't have it. must wear rags. Oh you need it for "this" in a second to "help wildfire help you", guess you gotta go back to the motel so "What's his dick" can tell you he hasn't seen you in a few days and Wildfire is "missing"..... I don't think that needs explaining further.

8. I spent a lot of time looking for pinup fragments just to NOT find them... Guess what... locked behind a quest, appears later. Excuse me...? Make them all appear later. What's your damage. You trying to get more playtime? For what? At least it doesn't even tell you it's not on the map yet. Because that is super helpful information you do NOT need.

9. The badge.... Some scenes you take off the badge you aren't wearing, for lore reasons. You are told you need to wear the badge to keep the guards off you. The truth is you only need that for like 5 minutes in the early game. After that no one gives a flying flip if you are wearing the badge or not, aside from regular NPCs that want to smash. But you can happily just reject them all. None of them block your path or hinder your progress in any way. I get it being a "scare" for the player and taking it off is "liberating". But when you forcefully change outfits, again for lore reasons, and the badge auto unequips it's super lore-breaking in my mind, because "no I have my badge on.... oh wait no I don't, when did that get in my inventory and not on my jacket that I've had it on for my entire playthrough, cause why not." But then in the first dance scene you have to take it off, but by that point you probably aren't even wearing it. Is it that labor intensive to run a check for it? Or did that just slip through the cracks.

10. Super Spoiler Warning: The GAG route (although it is fairly obvious in hindsight) does not warn you that you are making a game altering change. I was so close to completing the Bar slut, the Porno star, and the Townhall Dump all at the same time, because all though the townhall "closes early". When you finish at the bar and it's "getting late and you should head home", you can still go to the town hall and do a shift, without it going past curfew. That's probably another bug. However it was super annoying to finish one quest right before the other two and then get locked out of my saves because I decided to follow it along thinking I would be able to go back later, when in reality the free version ends after one training and then sends you back to the main menu. I doubt the paid version let's you go back and continue those quests but hey. You never know with all the other plot holes I discovered.
