deepbluefeeling rated Down The River's Edge

A downloadable game for Windows and macOS.

Admittedly it feels like most of the budget in this game went into the extremely good CGs and animations, and less so anywhere else. Which, hey, play to your strengths. -10 stars for not letting us top the deer, but I guess with the Javi ass shot as the advertising CG, we gotta give the people what they came for ;>

In all seriousness, I liked this story. I don't know that it did anything really new or challenging, but the prose was fine and the direction was good. The sex scene gets an award (I mean beyond the art, which is insanely hot) for not having any weird or cringey dialogue. No essential juices or meatsticks or anything to be found. On the flipside said award gets blasted from orbit that this twink is taking that on his first time with no real lube. Country boys make due but come on now.

I actually think the most interesting part was Javi's relationship with the sheriff. His sort of erotic torture of Javi, tying him up naked and making him beg, sinking his teeth into his neck. and then in the car he has this fascination with him that he can't figure out. .... and also blasts him with like 100 macroaggressions per second. Maybe a strange comparison, but it reminds me of frollo in Hunchback of Notre Dame.

So equally appropriate that Javi is the one that shoots him dead. Which is also sort of my one real critique about the writing, which is that Javi doesn't really strike me as a "hardened" criminal. He's an outlaw, but until he's getting tortured, it seems like he pretty much got to be sheltered from any of the downsides, especially since he doesn't really get too far into his career before it ends. Becoming an outlaw isn't much of a sacrifice considering where he started out. We get this image of him at the beginning as sort of a unbreakable badass, toughened by hard labor, breaking guards noses, but I don't necessarily think any of his internal monologue or actions match that.

Still the game was really enjoyable, the art, the palette, and I mean, who doesn't like cowboys and attractive gay men. Great work!
