BubblyBobbles rated Ladybird (C64)

A downloadable C64 game.

Great graphics (grungy 80s vibe) and sound. Poor playability. Billed as a puzzle game, but it's not so much a puzzler as it is a random meander. There's no logic (at least, none that's immediately obvious to the player) to the order in which items need to be collected. Just feels like wandering around desperately trying to figure out what to do next while avoiding enemies that are too difficult to avoid (ants!). Too easy to get trapped in a corner with no way out. Doesn't feel like there's a whole lot of strategy or puzzle-solving involved. Just run around randomly until you complete each level. Abysmal hit detection makes this even worse. Nice idea for game mechanics but poorly documented and implemented. Very disappointing as this has the potential to be a great game! I'm sure the developers can do better than this. Great aesthetics and the ability to play in VICE using save states elevate this to (barely) three stars, but I won't be playing this on original hardware.
