Ventral was a VN that kept taking me by surprise. The interview process, the resulting changes, the setup, it was all a lovely start to a story. I loved the CGs and sprites, they were very expressive- the image of all of them stood in an elevator together was really good!- and the music and sound design was superb. It also felt to me like a story about being in a game jam, which was a fun touch! I'm looking forwards to seeing more of this as it releases.
If I have one bit of feedback, it is that the pacing is a little off. We spend a lot of time at home as Naro gets ready for the interview, which we probably don't need to see in such depth- the story could have started with them in the car park, musing over how strange this interview is. Similarly, it felt like we spent too little time in the interview grappling with the change into a dog, the fact that Naro has been kidnapped etc.; giving Naro more space to consider these changes and threats would have made them feel more impactful, and also let us know more about how Naro thinks
Of course, I totally understand pacing being hard to pull off with a game jam!! And I'm really excited to read more.
