Emberbright rated Eidolon

A downloadable game.

An amazing game-- I didn't expect it to be as long or as involved as it was, but I was extremely satisfied by the ending. A few games have made use of file manipulation and fourth-wall-breaking but Eidolon made it its own: It was unexpectedly heartwarming to encourage the characters and help them find freedom and purpose in the real world. Most fourth-wall-breaking games tend to use its tropes for horror and/or tragedy so it was refreshing to  participate in it with positively.

It took me a bit to realize that breaking the game gave the girls memories of previous playthroughs, but I decided to stay with Vivian (who I romanced on the playthrough that activated the fourth-wall segment) and broke it off with the others and I appreciated that I could do so gently, especially with Adrianna. The manipulations the characters pulled off were effective, furthering their characters (ex. Adrianna hijacking your cursor) instead of being gimmicky, and the letters you receive after the credits were unexpectedly touching. Conversations felt more natural than a lot of conversations I've seen in games, especially after the fourth-wall breaking, and I plan on replaying to see more character-endings and letters; that being the case, I really appreciate the ability to select game-length on replays.

I also like how the author-avatar Easter egg appeared in a different sprite style than the others, further drawing a line between what 'belongs' in the game and what doesn't, and the way that the locations start closing up and getting dark as the game enters its endgame was effective and atmospheric; there was some legitimate melancholy as I uploaded the girls and the campus became emptier and emptier, though Erica's continued existence was good for a chuckle. It's clear that a lot of work and care went into the making of this game and I just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you!
