Giving this game time gives it a chance to REALLY sing - try to make sure every player has a mini-game with each other to REALLY explore how the crew feels about the captain (even when the captain isn't there, their presence is), and don't be afraid to get really dark or give the captain hell (within lines and veils) for failures both real and perceived, and perhaps more punishment than they actually deserve. Likewise, don't be afraid to look at the captain with rose-colored glasses, forgetting what it was really like. You will likely want to run at least two sessions of it to give yourselves enough time to explore the themes of the character archetypes and relationships between characters. I HIGHLY recommend this game, and absolutely adore it and LOVED playing it.
