I'm ashamed to say that chapter 3 was not as good as I hoped. Chapters 1 & 2 are still near-masterpieces to me. But chapter 3 confuses me, because it doesn't really explain its existence.
Spoilers:
How is Max alive? Why does time keep resetting? The ending was happy, our main characters are alive. But considering everything that came before, and how they fought, the end felt anticlimactic.
It doesn't, imo, meaningfully build on chapters 1 & 2. Together, they weaved a beautifully tragic tale. They built off each other by showing different sides of the same story. The ending of 2 was different, but it can easily be interpreted as being Michelle's dying hallucination.
Meanwhile, chapter 3 is nearly completely divorced from it. If it explained why time resets, then I could buy it. And if it's a multiverse thing, then that makes the ending worse, since it doesn't matter to the previous chapters. Unless the serpent's death echoed across all worlds.
It's also weird that the story seems to build up a bond, even a romance considering the blushing, between Michelle and Max. Max likes Natalia, and we already were building something with Doug and Michelle. Why confuse matters?
Speaking of Max, why is he the final hero? I kind of get it; he's the missing piece that can turn this tragedy into a happy ending. But again, why? His survival just happens, and he's also somehow connected to the ancient people that can harm the beast. Worse, his survival didn't help in the first half of the chapter, before the fake ending. So maybe he's not the winning piece? Then after that, another reset, and Zoe comes back. Huh? How is she alive now? What is happening, and how does it all connect? How does chapter 3 continue the story and build off the previous ones?
I don't know. Maybe I'm stupid, but that's why this has gone from a 6/5 to a 4/5. Sad to say. Still worth a play for chapters 1 & 2 though.
