Cardigan rated 2nd Shift

Cardigan rated a game 310 days ago
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

A blue collar tale is something that I rarely see tackled in Furry works. With characters that are frank and relatable, 2nd Shift delivers on an engaging story filled with personal and drama social commentary all paced excellently. ...Would that it was so the whole way through.

For a lot of the project, readers follow a story that feels straight out of someone's real life. Characters are flawed and appealing in believable ways. Jake's expectations and thoughts I found particularly relatable, but it is easy to say so for every character. Aside from MY WOLF and one other character, we get but a glimpse into the cast's lives, but the brevity is used flawlessly, showing these personalities through action and word.

Presentation was fun as well. Character designs are deceptively simple while hiding neat details in plain sight (Did you notice Zane and Jean's friendship bracelets?). There's also a care to add lightning to sprites that is simple and effective, helping with the (admittedly small) disconnect between cartoony designs and photo backgrounds. I will say the "intense white eyes" end up used too often that becomes almost comical, but it's not much of a problem.

I don't think I can measure words here, that twist was one of the most deflating experiences I've had playing any FVN. 2nd Shift joins the likes of NITW and Echo in what I see as the abandonment of interesting interpersonal drama for something that's supposed to be more "exciting" only to create an identity crisis. While these three works have varying degrees in how poorly I believe the change-up to have worked out, 2nd Shift is not the worst of them. That said, for how little there is spent "post-twist," it ended up weighing down a lot more of my experience. While there are attempts to foreshadow the reveal, they're so scant and obtuse they only make sense look backwards. More than how jarring the shift is, my real problem with it lies in how it ends up cheapening the character arc of one of the most compelling characters here.

Real though it is, I hope my disappointment won't scare people away from this project. It is genuinely excellent for 2/3 (perhaps more!) of its runtime, but I sincerely believe the twist existing at all is worse than its execution. Perhaps the change-up won't be as bothersome to most, and if that's the case, they'll have a great time.
