City of sneps rated The Demons We Hide

City of sneps rated a Visual Novel 311 days ago
A browser Visual Novel made in HTML5.

I have pretty mixed feelings about this VN regarding both the presentation and the writing.

The presentation has some very glaring issues: no audio being the biggest one. The sprites always just pop up with absolutely no transition to ease them in, and their ridiculously huge size makes them cover up the entire screen almost like a jumpscare. The sprite's being so big is a very strange choice (but it kinda works??). They're so big, that Arkadiusz's ears are permanently clipped at the top.

The sprites are simple and from what I've seen divisive, but I actually really like them. I think the very simple high contrast style could work if refined further with more clear and confident shapes, kinda like in the fellow jam submission of Wolf of White Waters. Or... god forbid... Homestuck. Other than that, my biggest gripe is the lack of different expressions.

The writing was fun, just as messy, but more enjoyable for me. The opening scene is an interesting cold opening that could only be enhanced with some more visuals and transitions. Overall, the prose has this floaty, old timey voice that I really enjoyed, especially when the MC and Arkadiusz are bonding.

The cabin segment is my favourite because it is the most shamelessly self indulgent horny scene written using only one hand, describing Arkadiusz breasting boobily, assing cheekily and swinging dickily, but in a ye olde English oh dear heavens! voice. I am a sucker for horny prose made by and for scandalised Victorian waifs.

Other than that, I think the VN juggled a bit too many things for its short wordcount. The pacing of both the misadventure and the romance was at an insanely fast pace and the setting, the curse, and the backstories of the two leads felt pretty undercooked.

I am under the impression that many of my issues are a result of the jam deadline. I have the confidence that this author has the skill to give us a less messy VN, given enough practice, resources and time. I'm looking forward to a post-jam version with the jank ironed out and to future works from the dev!
