Cardigan rated Depiction of Pleasure

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

When I was told Depiction of Pleasure leaned heavily on metaphor and imagery, I braced myself for I'm not someone who rarely enjoys stories that are too abstract. Fortunately, it is not the case here. That's not say there is no metaphoric depth here (there absolutely is), but this FVN avoid the usual trappings that often lead me to not enjoying that aforementioned style of story.

For one, this project has a "standard" plot, letting its metaphors ingrain themselves into the story rather than themselves be the story. As I see it, this helps ground the story in something more relatable while making it a less overbearing or confusing vehicle for its messages.

Depiction of Pleasure also benefits from visuals that offer a welcome balance between what they're supposed to represent metaphorically and what the characters experience in the story itself. However, it must be said that this is quite the ambitious project in a visual sense and (as of the version I've played) it frequently falls short of achieving what it wants to do. When this problem is at its worst, said shortcomings actually harm the storytelling itself, making an already dense story harder to follow. Perhaps a more skillful hand and/or more time could have mended that issue, as it stands however, it does harm the project quite a bit.

While I find it difficult to call this "undercooked" it is an unfortunate truth that a lot is missing from this package. Even so, the story is pretty good and conveys its metaphor with a good deal of skill and wisdom, which I found engrossing.
