Atticus rated The King's Poisoner

A downloadable game.

Played this at a convention, just two friends and myself, plus the GM. There were a lot of elements that I think worked:

  • The idea of using blackjack as rolls for succeeding was much more engaging than dice.
  • Having a list of words and suggestions as prompts sped the game up, none of is having to think of things COMPLETELY from the ground up.
  • The use of acts gave a good indication of where we were in the game, and we could be secure both in the knowledge of how much time until the climax of the story, and knowing when it make our moves.
  • Elegantly streamlined, but still fun, rules around the consequences of failed/successful "rolls", and the structure of the acts.

One critique I have is despite the rules being very easy to grasp, the single page rule sheet looked quite overwhelming. I think the tradeoff was meant to be a single page of rules as a selling point, but I think the density of the information had me a bit apprehensive. I think the parts of the page that visually divide things, the blue boxes containing separate info, were the clearest and most accessible. Unsure if it's possible to do more of that, considering how much information is there.

We also accidentally pushed the game to its limits and came across some edge cases in the rules. I heard in the official release there is a guide that talks about these edge cases, though.

In conclusion, great game, and we've immediately invited some particularly talented-at-improv friends over to play again!
