A well-crafted and engaging game with meaningful choices, a strong visual identity, and a rich story, though somewhat predictable at times and not particularly groundbreaking in its mechanics - still well worth the full price.
Let me start by saying that Mistwinter Bay is much bigger than it seems - in more ways than one. Beyond the sheer number of characters, most of whom are romanceable, the game offers a surprisingly long story and plays around with several different mechanics in terms of gameplay and narrative progression. As far as I know, the game was developed by just two people, which is a Herculean feat worthy of praise.
Aside from the sheer amount of content, it's important to highlight that the game boasts a lot of quality. I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to be surprised by it - after all, most of the time, it's fairly obvious what’s going to happen, either despite or because of your choices. But some characters manage to completely catch you off guard and throw you off balance right when you start thinking nothing could surprise you anymore (MG, I’m looking at you).
The developers' greatest strength is clearly in creating lovable characters with small contradictions that make them human and evoke empathy. The price of this expertise, however, is that whenever a character is supposed to be evil, they either turn into a cartoonish villain stereotype or, in reality, are just misunderstood - the so-called villain ends up being a tragic figure.
As for choices, the game deserves high praise, as it genuinely gives players significant power to shape both the present and future world, as well as the lives (and deaths) of the town’s characters. The developers lean on certain clichés, especially when establishing the core personalities of the characters, but they execute the concept well. And, to be fair, there are some characters with a fresh and innovative twist.
All in all, I definitely recommend paying full price for this game. At the very least, it’s refreshing to experience a work crafted with such meticulous care when we gamers are so often drowning in a sea of generic content disguised by flashy visuals and gratuitous nudity.
P.S.: It’s downright cruel that we can’t adopt the little girl from the wall. I replayed the game several times trying to make it happen - she’s absolutely adorable.
