Jill O' Lantern is a charmingly queer VN with adventure game elements. In addition to working through the narrative, there are periodic "clue-finding" point-and-click sequences. The narrative world that it builds is a combination of slasher film meets mystery novel with fantasy elements, and it works to make the player really feel for the cast and want to learn what's actually going on.
The characterization is excellent, with characters who elicit strong emotions and draw you into their motivations. Vivian and Jill make for a compelling duo just to start, and the rest of the cast really makes the complicated relationships Vivian has really compelling to the reader. Throw in a bunch of queerness and you've got a recipe for a cast who you're rooting for, has something to say, and you really enjoy witnessing the tribulations, failures and successes.
The music is really good, and the graphics make effective use of both polygonal 3D models and 2D art to visualize the story.
Overall, I think the world is a really fun one that Screen Savor Studios created, and the game is worth reading. The point-and-click search for bonus things in order to unlock additional choices in the finale is a little annoying, but overall the experience is a very solid one. If you like inversions of slasher films, mystery stories, magic and demons, and awkwardly queer lesbians, Jill O' Lantern is going to be right up your alley!
