I wasn't sure what to expect with this game, but I loved it, and it is a definite S+ tier game.
This is a choose-your-own adventure game where the choices are really about building love points with the girls you like. Apart from that the story appears mostly linear, although there are choices later that I wonder if they'll have a plot impact.
I came back to rewrite and revise my review from 5 star to one star. Why?
1.) It's a bit ridiculous how RAIN is used as a plot device because people can't go out into it. I mean, this isn't really something I care about but the number of times I've run into it is ridiculous. It's like the only weather the writer knows is rain. I'm not sure what rain did to them, but it must have been a doozy.
2.) The writers are very black and white with choices in that they're right or wrong. There's no middle ground. This includes whether to push a girl or not for sex. Which leads to:
3.) The game is very judgy about what is and isn't okay leaning heavily into consent when the player chooses, but IGNORING consent when the writer chooses, directly after a "we'll go at your speed" "NO I'm not comfortable" and then the MC does it anyway. This is exactly how you get rape cultures. I don't care when it's part of a story/flavor that is advertised upfront so you can make a choice when selecting a game, but what really annoys me is how much the author doesn't let the player choose, but then makes the exact same choice a player might without player consent or the girls consent. It's hypocritical.
4.) There's a lot of infantilization of female characters, the male MC constantly has objectified thoughts about the women. I mean, I'm a horndog, but I've NEVER had thoughts like the MC does because I'm a horndog for the full person, unless maybe I'm at home doing some happy alone time activities. The MC, is looking at the females as sex devices and not people they care for. There's a difference and I question if the writer understands this. It's the start of the creepy vibe I'm getting from the writing, but there's more.
5.) Harem games can be tough, but it's clear from the writing that the author has zero experience with multiple females in a relationship. Real world is that it can be challenging because instead of two people working out their flaws, quirks, preferences, etc there are now more. I have found that communication and respect are keys as well as setting expectations and making sure that each person is getting the attention they need balanced with what the main love interests need. The harem approach of the game is starting to feel disrespectful (doesn't work real world, unless it's a kink), is ignoring communication (DEFINITELY doesn't work real world) and instead justifies it with "we never said we were dating", and I again circle back to infantilization, which I think is gross but the likelihood of every women in a harem being as presented in the game is nil. Those aren't real women and their autonomy seems to be getting more stripped to allow a folding into a harem. That doesn't have to happen, and it's a shame that it is. Experience matters, and I think the author would write a better story if they actually researched (I'm sure writing exists) how people with multiple lovers exist within relationships. It's work, it's fun, it's rewarding, it's a disaster at times, but all the things it is, is not reflected in the writing. Honestly, I question how much sex the writer has, as the MC refers to a woman who has sex for ten minutes and wants more as a "nympomaniac". I mean, i've met one woman who was a three to five minute girl, but most prefer 20 minutes (assuming they orgasm at least once in that time) and an hour plus is too much for most of the women I've been with as they get sore (but not all, always outliers). 10 minutes is NOT a nympomaniac even if they orgasm a couple of times. Orgasms that happen as quickly as portrayed in the game, I've noticed" tend to not be super satisfying and it can be a half dozen (if they're coming that quickly) before women final have the BIG orgasm where they're satisfied. Quick orgasms seem to be more on the shallow side (usually, but again not always). I also disliked liked the nymphomaniac because it's name calling and putting down women who enjoy sex AND it's not a real psychological term and has a troubling history if you're actually educated on the topic. I recognize it might be flippant, but for me it was a loaded word.
6.) The story is going into extreme white knightism where the women are helpless without the MC. I hate this in games as it cheapens the character development of the women.
7.) The women all feel like they're 12 because of the increased infantilism. Some of the models are also of questionable age. The writing had entertained me and I overlooked some things because it's just a game, but then there was a pedophile scene where the MC has to kill a pedophile. The author chose to make the pedophile gay, which is the start of what rubbed me the wrong way. Next, the player has to kill them to get love points. Next, I question if the author didn't make a straight pedophile for reasons of their own hate of gays, but also I question whether half their audiences might go "hold up a minute, am I killing me because I'd totally do that!" It was also a missed opportunity because the morality of lusting after computer code could have been brought up. What makes it morally wrong if humans aren't being impacted? There was some great philosophy fodder to dive into, but the game has been ignoring these questions to the point I question how not impacted the MC is in a murder home when directly the cause of death with others. Particularly as it is coming to light that the players don't fully understand the rules of the world they're taking part in.
The rape, the railroading, the infantilization and younger looking models all seem to have come to a head with the pedophile scene where I paused and reassessed what I was digesting. The writing feels like someone who wants to see themselves as a the good guy, but in reality they're horrible but they're justifying it with "yeah, but I don't cross these lines except when I do". Suddenly everything is in a new light and I'm left with a bad taste in my mouth going "this just isn't okay".
I don't know if the original writing was like this before update 7. I know that I had previously had a five star review and loved the game, but all the problems I had with it really came to a head with the update 7 and I've given myself a couple of days to breath before the review, but I can't let it go yet. Make a rape game. Cool, it's a flavor. Make way too young modeling game, cool, I'll avoid it. This game has subject matter that it views negatively but DOES ANYWAY and the hypocrisy is what I hate the most. The writer is a sinner casting stones everywhere but at themselves where the sin is the heaviest.
