There's a rollercoaster of tension, not too much to be overbearing or get the reader used to it, not too little to let the reader calm down. Enough hints that keep your mind wondering and thinking. 

The ending is great too. Really wraps the story in a neat 3 act structure with a distinct emotional feel to every scene, like a fine Michelin Star Meal. The ending is like a bitter desert, leaving you wanting more, leaving you unable to leave the table bc you want to keep talking about the flavor profile and yearning for more.
