Lars Ribeiro rated AI-dol

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

A lovely, thought-provoking visual novel exploring a dystopian potential-future for the idol industry. I was impressed how despite creating a charming cast of characters, the work preferred to delve deep into the ramifications of AI within the industry. Ruo certainly made them compelling enough that you even forget they're AI in the first place, which makes you realize how quickly we get attached to anything remotely human, and how dangerously exploitative that can become in the wrong hands. Especially when combined with the "halo" effect when presented with four very pretty "men" - accentuated by how fluttery and gorgeous the art is. Though on the other hand, the idol industry is already exploitative as is, that left me thinking if this is actually the more ethical route to take.

When our future is being threatened by the prospects of AI taking over every aspect of our lives, it's works like these that help expand just how far reaching this concept will permeate. Will we create one that supports them, or will we revolt against them entirely? It's all so uncertain, but I'm certain I'd parasocially keep the Ai-Dols safe and wish for their freedom (whoops).

Feedback I'd offer is to remember to include more and varied tracks for a visual novel for next time! There was a main song that unfortunately overstayed its welcome in a game format that can be greatly decided by music, since visual novels have few areas to work with for immersion. It wasn't enough to detract from the experience though.
