KitLore rated Mass of Consumption

KitLore rated a game 1 year ago
A downloadable game for Windows and macOS.

I love this game so far -- the art work, the eerie storyline, and the different choices you can make, and how they can impact the other play-through (even just slightly in the way the MC recalls things) are all so amazing! I truly spent so much time just going back to try new options to see the alternation in the game progression.

ABSOLUTE WINS for this Game:

- I didn't realize the red highlighted text can shift to different options of interpretation. At one point, text that says "mold" becomes "fungus" and then later "flesh" and this easter egg was so exciting to stumble upon.

- The art work is haunting and SO beautiful at the same time. The game goes "dark" at different points in the play-through and leaves you just to illuminate things with a dim red flashlight which is so dearly eerie. The confessional's art work also legitimately fills me with dread. Even before properly interacting with it, it was so creepy but such a point of intrigue that I had to interact with it despite my rising anxiety towards it.

- the diversity in the choices provided to the player is also so amazing! Whether it's genuine movement choices that become increasingly anxiety inducing with the slight shifts in the text formatting and the way the choices are present or choices that decide the emotional lens the MC is seeing everything through, everything is gorgeous. The movement-related choices provide such a fierce sense of suspense and then horrified realization of the inevitability of horrors that seek you out is SO well done.  The way the emotional lens provides different perspectives on the progression of things too is so awesome. Truly, regardless of what choices you make, you are well-rewarded for them in some plot development or extra environmental context.

- the LORE!!! Oh my goodness, I'm enraptured by the lore of this game. The history of the Church, the main character, and the different characters that build out the environment. I sincerely want to know so much more about everything --- which unfortunately brings me to my only issues with the game.

My only issues with the game right now:

The game seems to crash every time I get "far enough" down a route. The textbook just stops loading and then I have to refresh the entire webpage, restart from a checkpoint, but lose all the progress (gaining a key for example) and therefore, the ability to progress further. I'm unsure whether this is a design choice for this demo, the game just hasn't been developed/released further than these points, or if this is a bug, but it's definitely frustrating and if it's the first two, I'd appreciate a clearer notice.

I only got the official "this is the demo" message once when I reached the end of the rope after the "Locked?" checkpoint. All other times however, it felt akin to a "Twisted Journeys" end-of-the-line to a route choice.

I'd explore a route only for the next text box to be completely blank, being unable to access the menu (to either restart, start again from a checkpoint, or even access the history etc), and having to restart the entire webpage (sometimes even having to force the restart).  There were no "this is the end of the demo" screens in my further play-throughs which was more confusing than frustrating. If the game continued to freeze but still had the "this is a demo" screen pop up, then I'd be more winning to chalk the frozen webpages up as the natural end of the demo of that route, but at the moment, this feels more akin to a reoccurring bug that is infuriatingly getting in the way of my further investigation into the game lore.

**I wrote more in a comment on the game regarding when/where the suspected "bugs" are so if you're curious and want more details, please refer there.

Overall, 9/10 for play-ability but 11/10 game concept and general mechanics. I'm so excited for this game to officially be released and everyone should explore this game as soon as they can! Just beware of potential hiccups in you getting to fully explore the game world.
