A downloadable game.
A functional, above-average Doomlike.
These are the good parts:
- Character art and cutscenes are of high quality.
- Levels are surprisingly varied and interesting.
These are the okay parts:
- The weapons lack any real 'weight' (pun!) and feedback when using them or hitting enemies is a little lackluster. There isn't enough juice or grit to really differentiate between the heavy hitting and light hitting weapons. It's hard to tell what's doing a lot of damage other than by when the characters are filling up. Even that can be a little difficult if there are lots of characters moving around.
- Enemies obscure one another, which is particularly troublesome in very busy rooms. I don't know of a way around this. Maybe it's unavoidable. I did find myself stuck for a long time looking for a zombie/naga that was still alive in a pile of characters I'd beaten.
The frustrating:
- At the last level I found myself running completely out of ammo with just a little bit left of the final boss. It's possible to lock oneself and have to restart just before the end, since there are no weapons that use zero ammunition. Perhaps a hand-pump is in order.
- I have to wonder if doom is the best format for this kind of thing. Most of the time the pace was too frantic to really appreciate the animation or art. Doom is good. The art is good. The genre just doesn't feel like the best conduit for the kind of material. I like things to be slower paced and to enjoy the kind of content with more 1:1 interactions, but perhaps that's just a me thing.
Overall I don't regret the purchase. The effort and passion put in really shows, and I'm grateful the op decided to release all of the assets for the game in the download. That's a nice touch.
