Kazito rated Carmilla

Kazito rated a game 6 years ago
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Really disappointed here, but I'll explain that later. There are good points about this game that I'll touch on first.

A clear positive is the artwork, extremely well done. The gothic vibe was executed perfectly.

The story was pretty interesting for the most part until nearing the end, and although the dialogue seemed a bit foreign at times, I suppose that was sort of the idea. If you don't 100% understand every line, you're probably in the majority reading this.

Onto the bad. I was led to believe this was shoujo-ai GxG, but the romance, in reality, was merely brushed over, and by the end you're left wondering what the point of it all was. You'd think the two girls were, at LEAST, very invested in each other. That is, until you see the ending (spoilers ahead). We very quickly learn that Carmilla was the cause of the issues our protagonist was facing, and that she is in fact, a vampire. You'd think upon that revelation, our main character would be mortified, deeply confused, any number of things, but her reaction, for the most part, is just "wait what?". When it comes to Carmilla's initial attempted murder, you'd think maybe Laura would try to save her, or talk down the offender. Nope. What about some final exchange between Carmilla and Laura, after all they've been through together? Not that either.

It just ends up being a very rushed and anticlimactic ending where Carmilla was revealed to be a vampire, is killed, and every character who once completely adored Carmilla felt and acted completely indifferent, as if they had never known her personally to begin with. My reaction to the ending was "...that's it? Really?"

I'd argue that this is NOT a romance. In fact, it has nothing to do with romance. If you're coming into this expecting romance, I'd suggest not wasting your time. This is more of a decent mystery story with a really bad ending.
