Nawalin rated MEGACHESS

Nawalin rated a MEGACHESS 1 year ago
A browser MEGACHESS made in HTML5.

Insanely good level design and game mechanics. Even without the different starting classes, the replay value is very high.

As a cheapskate I'm surprised I would actually pay 5$ for a more polished version. UX needs quite a few improvements, e.g.

- Color player and enemy pieces more differently.
- Explain that enemies only move when they can instantly hit you.
- Maybe show a quick text overlay in the middle of the screen, when taking turns. The enemy automatically taking a turn and doing nothing was confusing as a beginner. The current animation was counterproductive -- At first I thought the glowing screen border was some sort of danger or damage warning as you often see in 3D shooters; and then I thought some pieces could move twice in one turn, because I did not notice the enemy took their turn without doing nothing.
- Show remaining health points for megapieces. Health is very hard to estimate from the graphics.
- When moving a megapiece, highlight the target region better. Center the region around the mouse, and (if the region centered around the cursor is not reachable) snap to the closest region still containing the cursor.
- In the move preview in the top left, increase the visible area and differentiate between jumping and line-of-sight.
- When hovering over a piece with AoE attacks (e.g. the fork) in the room, have the overlay (of possible moves) show which fields belong together in one AoE attack, e.g. letting the groups blink alternately.
- In the same overlay, show damage numbers. The damage done to or from a megapiece is hard to guess if you didn't have the exact same situation before (e.g. megapiece has 3/4 health, does it only do 3 damage to another megapiece? What if I hit only the corner of another megapiece? What if I use an AoE attack to hit multiple fields of a megapiece? etc. etc.)
- ...
- Fix bugs, e.g. sometimes some of my pieces were purple while other had the color of the current level.

Nevertheless: Splendid work for a game jam. Thank you so much for making and sharing this game!

I'm so glad you continue development, and I am really looking forward to the final result :)
