A funny and endearing dating sim vn. I enjoyed getting to know all the characters, but Avery's route (good ending) was my favorite of the three. I thought it had the most emotional impact. Which is what I love to see. The cute art and GUI complimented the silly vibes of the story well. I always appreciate getting to choose the PC's pronouns. The overall structure was straightforward and clear, making it easy to follow along. Also, I think having each dev write a different route is a brilliant, fun idea for splitting the workload. Especially for a jam game.
In terms of constructive criticism, my main concern is I felt many of the choices were based on personal preferences. Such as what the PC wants to order, whether the PC is a people person or not, etc. While it's great to have those for the purpose of flavor and roleplaying, they shouldn't be consequential in leading to a good or bad ending. This sends a message of 'you have to act a certain way or like a certain thing in order to get people to like you'. Instead, considering this is a dating sim, I would prefer the choices that lead to the good/bad endings to be more focused on having good/bad relationship skills. For example: requiring the player to pay attention to what the characters' are saying, establishing and respecting boundaries, being supportive and understanding of one another, etc. These are things that will help us build a stable relationship with friends and love interests, not liking a certain food or being an introvert vs extrovert.
To be fair, I do feel some of the 'relationship skill' options were there, specifically in Avery's route. Which is probably why it was my favorite. It felt more focused on respecting and getting to know Avery as a person. I'd like to see more of that incorporated in the other routes as well.
More minor criticisms, because the routes are so short, I think it'd be nice if instead of taking us back to the main menu, it cycled back to the 'choose your date' screen, so I wouldn't have to keep entering my name and pronouns. Considering this is a jam game, I think it's understandable, but I feel like the writing could benefit from some editing now that the jam is over, there's time to polish it up. Felt a little 'wordy' (overuse of conjunctions, weak adverbs/adjectives such as 'slight' or 'immediately') and the abundance of short choppy sentences made it feel repetitive in some places. It was sometimes narrative heavy (more telling than showing), for example, Roy's good ending where it was just a black screen with narration summarizing the interaction instead of demonstrating it through dialogue or visuals. However, once again, considering this was done in a month, I'm assuming the devs just ran out of time, but it is something that could be improved upon were there to be a post-jam update.
Overall I think this was a fun and charming visual novel. I was chuckling pretty much throughout the entire story. And the good endings warmed my heart. Thanks for reading my review and making such a delightful experience. Would love to see more in the future! ^_^
