Loudo rated Everglow

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

I'll get the main negative point out of the way: I think the writing style of this VN is a bit on the weaker side, probably at least in part due to the developer being an ESL speaker and Russian being the original language the game. I read this VN for the FVN server's book club and if I hadn't felt "forced" to finish it for that event, I would have probably dropped it, because the first third of it was a bit tough to get through, at least for me.

Having said that, I'm glad I pushed past the initial impressions, because now that I've finished it, it is going straight to my recommendation list! Keeping this review spoiler free, what happens as the story progresses forces the reader to reconsider everything that happened before in a different light. On my second (and third) read, I realized that almost every scene or detail, that previously seemed random, it's actually very deliberate and important to the plot.

Part of my appreciation for this story was that it forced me to really think in order to understand everything that happened: so if you are a reader who likes to be challenged, this is definitely the story for you. At the same time, most people who participated in the book club liked the work even though they weren't as interested in the logistical side of things. So, while this story is probably not for everyone, I think its appeal is wide enough.

Even though this VN was a lot more plot-focused than the average FVN, it also had some strong themes, which are interwoven in the plot. I agree with a lot of other readers that the ending does come a bit too suddenly and should have been developed a bit more, but other than that I think that everything else shows a clear attention to its main character's arc.

I've been talking a lot about the writing and the story because I feel like there isn't as much to say about the art and the music: the presentation is top-notch. I'm especially impressed by how coherent with itself it feels. Even high-quality FVNs sometimes suffer from feeling like a collage of different art styles and/or art directions. With the possible exception of one character's excessively sized cleavage, everything clearly belongs to the same universe and the same creative work.
