JonnyLectron rated FUMES

JonnyLectron rated a mayhem 2 years ago
A downloadable mayhem for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

This is a fantastic vehicular shooter in the style of older PlayStation 1 graphics.

+Combat loop is pretty good. Drive, shoot, do flips!

+Variety of vehicles and guns to choose from! Every vehicle also has suspension upgrades. Everything is earned randomly at the end of each encounter.

+Damage is visual, and deforms the vehicles!

+Visual style is excellent! Comes with a bunch of different style presets in the options menu.

+Stable, hasn't crashed on me yet!

+Banging soundtrack

-Short play time due to the (currently, as of alpha 3) limited scope of objectives. Shoot down waves of enemies, shoot down bullet sponge boss, collect rewards after and then bling out for the next encounter. Each of my sessions has been 1-2 encounters, roughly half an hour. I have reached the current end boss and unlocked a large majority of the weapons and vehicles after around 4 hours.

-Short soundtrack, needs more music loops to switch between.

-Sounds are present, and excellent representations of the intended effect. However, its very plain right now.

-No power ups in the encounters, and hitting jumps or doing flips off of things doesn't net any kind of reward. Currently, the only way to earn health is to complete a wave. There is no currency (please don't add) no style points incentive to drive insane, and a limited amount of destructible props.

I want to see incentives to drive insane, such as bonuses to defense or offense based on flips and speed, or bonus rewards in whatever systems are implemented later for jumps and destruction of props/enemies.

Some more basic variety in tasks. Things such as courier missions, rescue, and a terrain mini map. I'd like to see the reward system NOT use currency, because I think that will slow the current action of the game down. However, the name of the game is FUMES, and you do suck fumes through the front of the vehicle at the end of each encounter. Maybe there might be a way to make a tiered layer of encounters based on how many fumes you've sucked in, as well as variety in missions based on total fumes gathered. Fumes could be used as a reputation system...

Overall, 3/5 (version alpha 3) with an extra star awarded due to the active Discord server used by the developers. Fantastic game, and I'm very excited to see where it goes. This review was posted before the Steam release.
