eshrafel rated TOUCHSTARVED: A Dark Romance Visual Novel

eshrafel rated a visual novel 2 years ago
A downloadable visual novel for Windows and macOS.

A visual novel that knows what it wants to be, and fortunately, has the writing and art behind it to accomplish its goals.

This game is up-front about what it is attempting, so this should be no surprise, however it is worth being clear. It is indeed a full novel - there is an interesting, if arguably contrived, main plot hook, and it has its own setting, even if at times the world building feels a little under-baked. This, however, is a visual novel that focuses on character, and in that sense, it does a very fine job indeed.

There is no fear of missing out on meeting someone here; everyone is introduced as part of the ongoing adventure. Perhaps to some this might feel a little rail-roaded, but it is sometimes a relief to have all your main stars introduced to you in short order. The game, in this sense, shows you its cards, provoking intrigue through the innate design and writing of the characters, rather than from hiding them away or limiting your options. The game has a distinct visual style, well represented by its key art, and none of said character design is at all a disappointment. In the writing department, some of them seem to have received a little more love and attention than others, but all of it is solid, if not very good, and I expect this to become more balanced as the story is developed further.

It is difficult to say more given the state of progress at this time, but the fact I stepped away wanting to continue can only be seen as a good sign. The choices presented to the player seem reasonable, and feel as if they have the potential for impact of the story rather than simply illusory prompts. Time will tell, but there is great potential here, both from this game, and the creators themselves.
