Playtime: Takes ~60 minutes to complete
Art: This game has a really nice artstyle that's reminiscent of a Gameboy game. This game makes me want to put a Raspberry Pi in a Gameboy shell just to run it.
Narrative: There's no narrative or world-building in this game.
Gameplay: The gameplay is simple, but perfect. You work your way downward through a pitch-black dungeon. Your only light sources are the lanterns in the dungeon (which usually aren't lit), and your arrows. You'll have to move quick though, because the fire from your arrows only lasts so long. There's a constant decision of whether you want to use your arrows for: killing enemies, a mobile light source, or gold (you get gold when killing enemies, lighting lamps, or shooting skulls). Pray that you don't run out, because once you do you're as good as dead since you can't see anything.
You use gold to buy upgrades that you keep through each run (which is what makes Roguelight a Roguelite). You'll start off weak, but be a bit stronger as you move forward.
Sound/Music: The audio is fantastic (make sure to show Jonathon Tree some love). It fits the game perfectly, and really wraps up the game in a bow.
Overall: This game takes very simple mechanics, but perfects them. Then this perfect bundle is wrapped up with fantastic art & audio that shows off its simplicity with a Gameboy-era style.
This game is well-worth your time. Be sure to leave a review and show some love for both Daniel and Jonathon! Amazing game guys, I look forward to future projects!
