zkassai rated BZZZT - 2023 DEMO

zkassai rated a game 2 years ago
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

This was a JOY to play.

It's a platformer, right? So I'll start by talking about the... mid-gameplay storytelling. I loved being able to move and mess around while characters talked. Especially after you finish the boss. Good stuff.

Oh, right! The platforming! The platforming is TIGHT. Tight enough that even though the robot can only jump, moving around is so fun that it doesn't feel limited (though I'm looking forward to what further upgrades we'll see in the full game!)

The level design felt really classic to me, but in a way that shows that even "classic" styles haven't been fully explored yet. The stationary guns were a great "aha!" moment to experience, and the way the boss fight was designed was really really interesting.

Visuals are PERFECT - I could grab a random screenshot, slap it onto a print and hang it on my wall, and it wouldn't look out of place.

And finally, onto my areas of expertise: the audio is really good. The audio direction feels unified; no sound effect feels out-of-place or weak. The music can be described in pretty much the same terms I used for the level design: classic thru and thru, but in a way that feels fresh enough.

If anything, I felt the need for MORE music. A calmer tune for the intro cutscene, an increase in tension for the non-test chambers where stakes are higher, and more vignettes for the little mini-scenes.

And finally, the greatest thing: Badbert. I love him.
