Lo rated Pikuniku

Lo rated a game 7 years ago
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

I really tried with this game, I tried playing when I was happy and upbeat, when I was calm and relaxed, but invariably I always came away with a tight feeling of frustration in my chest. If it was possible to ask for a refund on Itch.io, I would.

What you mostly do is move around, and the feeling of moving around in this game is somewhere between navigating an uncooperative vacuum cleaner and trying to grab more chopped vegetables than your hands have room for. It's uncomfortable and frustrating, sluggish and imprecise, and has lots of little touches that make it unnecessarily worse, for example: you can do a sort of mild sprint but anytime you STOP sprinting you automatically do a little jump that takes about a second to complete. Before that jump is complete, you may not water a plant, open a door, do a full-height jump, etc. Any time an objective said "find" or "explore" I tensed up like someone had told me I needed to redo all the dishes.

Other than that movement there is the dialogue which is full of this kind of humor, which can be very funny but is not doing it for me in Pikuniku, in part because I have to stop and read it when I really don't want to:

-SUDDEN YELLING ABOUT A THING THAT IS NOT ACTUALLY DRAMATIC!

-lowercase deadpan response.

Or it turns out a very fantastical creature has a regular person's name. Or any sentence that begins with "literally just a".
