Gretgor rated Halloween Forever

Gretgor rated a game 2 years ago
A downloadable game for Windows.

This is really good, but it has some flaws that are a bit hard to overlook.

See, on one hand, you have a very charming pixel art aesthetic, combined with some cute characters, great halloweeny soundtrack, and a decent difficulty level to go with it. The enemies and obstacles are varied, with every level introducing at least a new one, and most boss fights are pretty good as well.

On the other hand, though, there are several "gotcha" moments in the levels, where you can't possibly see what is coming until it's already too late. I'm talking blind jumps, off-screen enemies that instantly hit, and projectiles often showing up on screen just in time to push you into a pit before you can do anything about it.

Add to that the fact that the default setting of the game is a permanent game over every time you run out of lives, and the flaws pile up high, making the game more frustrating than it has to be. I mean, sure, you can give yourself 99 lives and friendly continues if you go into the options menu, but since both of those options are disabled by default, I never activated them because having to manually activate them felt like cheating to me.

Still, in the end, the fun outweighed the frustration, and I think there's a decent enough game here to recommend. Not too long, but certainly challenging enough to last a while.

I will, however, say that the asking price is a tad too high for the amount of content in the game. I think you should get this on sale if possible, not even sure if itch.io has sales.
