TheFamican rated Fell

TheFamican rated a game 2 years ago
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

Of all the vn's I am most sad about this particular delay. There's a quiet farm life feel to it, but the chars are charming and I find the setting and interactions engaging. Wes has a charming vulnerability about him and his family dynamic is sweet and endearing. I do have a couple small concerns, but that's because I'm so interested in what Fell is trying to do and I hope the developer can keep it close to their chest and return to it.

The main thing that concerns me is its pacing in what was considered the main route. An event happens in the story that forces a hard shift in its direction. The event itself isn't the problem, and I can only imagine that what isn't revealed then would have been revealed later if the story can continue on. But the idea for what was considered alternate/side content isn't really side content. The alternate content has all this development, and context to it which makes all the future events in the main story more impactful. And that development really solidifies the relationship and endears everyone to the reader. Mack treating Wes to his first drink for example. But for some reason, the decision was to treat this as side content when it could fill the gap before this important chapter ending event. We also get to see more of how Wes is viewed by certain townsfolk within the side route.

All this context set aside and hidden is I believe a minor error that can be corrected. Because none of this content interferes with the direction of the main story. Now of course adding everything into the main story would bog down and slow the narrative. Some editing and shifting of events and maybe even removal of small bits in the story would be necessary to make room for the alternate content to fit into the flow more comfortably. Giving Wes one or two more days to answer his friend about their life changing decision could easily correct this problem.

but the payoff from these changes would be huge. I felt more impacted by what happens between Wes and his father after learning about the side content. And I learn a little more about what Wes endures in his town after learning of this name of a bigoted character in the bar. All of this is important context and I suggest and hope the developer considers this in the future if Fell has one. And I hope it does. Because I've been holding onto this story for a year now. It's a wonderful beginning and I wish the team all the best.
