A game with some interesting ideas and a lot of heart! The paper cut-out characters are charming and fit well with the games theme of visiting ones memories and creations from an earlier age. However despite enjoying the simple style, not all the designs really did it for me (sorry Montacles...). Throughout there are also some very cool visual effects and the dynamic level backgrounds play well to the genre. Gameplay wise it felt pretty straight-forward and not too difficult, which I can't complain since my shmup skills are pretty lacking! I played through on story mode and was thankful for the infinite lives <3. The story itself really feels like the crux on which the game revolves and while it definitely has interesting elements it ultimately feels a little underdeveloped. The ambiguity around the world was actually a strong point for me, but I would have liked if it teased a few more details on the logic of the world, like what the "structure" meant and how exactly Mimi had been kidnapped from the real world. In general the characters felt a bit one note, and with the exception of Waicluse, could have had more in the way of character development. While all this is understandable given the length of the game, I think some aspects, such as Roy's eventual acceptance of his own past, could have been built upon more throughout. Despite my criticisms though, I really did find it to be an earnest game, which is something I'm always drawn to. I especially liked the character Waicluse and her arc from sexual fantasy to autonomous actor and hero.
