Roguelight shines light on a fascinating premise, (Heheh, get it?) managing your resources between seeing and fighting. This dual purpose of resources creates a wonderful gameplay loop in my opinion, Do you kill the monster, or light the lantern? Is there a way to do both with only 1 shot? The game isn’t so hard to make every shot stressful, but it is challenging until you get further up the upgrade tree, and it makes getting better at the game feel rewarding. Now, there are a couple of things that gets in the way a little, let’s start with how disorienting the darkness is. Let’s just say you do run out of arrows and have to navigate in the dark, you’re going to die pretty fast, right? Except if you did a good job and cleaned out the enemies, and there are no spikes around, you could be stuck for a long time as you scramble around in the darkness. One thing that I think might help was if the camera followed the player a little more closely, as it tends to lag behind a bit. This means that when you’re not getting any visual feedback, you wouldn’t even know where on the screen you currently are, which can be a problem if you know where you need to go, you just don’t have the light to do so. The other thing that I think could improve the game is being able to aim the bow at an angle. Currently you can only aim horizontally, and this is fine, but it would bring opportunities for both more rewarding play, and ways to fend off flying enemies, or just hit some of those dang lanterns!!! Regardless, a very good game, that I had fun playing.
